No man is an island

An appeal for money for relief, recovery, and reconstruction for the Hurricane Ivan victims in Grenada

  • In the aftermath of Hurricane Ivan (September 2004) and its devastating effect on Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique, a dedicated group of volunteers have joined together to support the residents of this tri-island country to help themselves emerge from this national disaster. The goal of these volunteers is to provide as much timely relief aid and reconstruction support as possible directly to those in need. Less than a year later, Hurricane Emily (July 2005) struck and put those Grenadians still living in makeshift and temporary housing back to square one and wreaked havoc on the struggling economic infrastructure.

Grenada Relief, Recovery and Reconstruction, Inc. (GR3) was formed in September 2004 to serve the needs of the most vulnerable inhabitants of Grenada in the wake of Hurricane Ivan with direct aid in the form of much needed food, water and basic living necessities along with timely medical care and community housing stabilization.

While relatively new as a formal NGO, components of this organization have been in Grenada much longer. Some of GR3's dedicated board members and volunteers have been active in community health and outreach programs for nearly 7 years.

We had significant short term relief efforts and have transitioned to long term reconstruction and community development efforts. With a focus on longer term solutions that will enhance living conditions, building standards and revitalize the local economy. GR3 has continued with successful, USAID-funded house repair projects using trained Grenadian staff and has fostered rural community development through paid jobs and skills training, primarily in St. David's Parish.

Since its formation, GR3 has worked on projects with Universities, Grenada Housing Authority, National Disaster Management Agency (NaDMA), the Agency for Reconstruction and Development (ARD), Oxfam, United Way, Habitat for Humanity, USAID, and many smaller organizations, as well as many of the Grenadian community-based organizations.

GR3 was registered as a non-profit corporation in Grenada in November 2004, and is considered comparable to a USA 501(c)(3) NGO, with governance according to Grenada law. It is comprised of a volunteer Board of Directors and officers, with support in daily work by a small staff and numerous volunteers.
